Vernal Equinox 2000

Earth Changes

In the early 70's, a small group of people and I became aware of coming events that have been since been labeled "Earth Changes" which would affect our planet for the remainder of the century. Our information came not from tabloid type so-called psychics or doomsday fanatics, but rather a small pool of deeply respected and well educated scientists and philosophers who had devoted their life work to observing the natural rhythms of Earth and the evolution of humankind, both spiritually and physically.

We were all in our twenties then. In typical post-adolescent style we zealously set out to shout this information from the rooftops. The Viet Nam War had ended; great strides were being made in terms of Civil Rights; the Women's Movement was well underway: we now turned our attention to nothing less than healing Mother Earth herself. Perhaps because of our age, or more likely because of our limited capacity to understand the magnitude of the transformation that was to transpire, we focused on the physical world and worked tirelessly to educate ourselves and others about how to consciously create more "earth-friendly" lifestyles.

We advocated eater lower on the food chain, gardening organically, living more simply and reducing or eliminating television watching altogether. We poured over maps of areas that in the future would become dangerously polluted or at risk of increasing seismic activity or other natural disasters and encouraged our families and friends to relocate to safer places. Those who were close to me at that time will remember a long letter I sent to all the people I knew, warning them of the impending chaos and outlining ways to avoid being helpless victims of this inevitability--strategies which ran the gamut from mundane lifestyle adjustments to magnificent new ways of meditating. As everyone might imagine, while I am writing this I am shaking my head and smiling quietly.

And, as everyone might also imagine, most of the recipients of that letter thought I had gone completely "'round the bend" and responded gently to my letter, in which I had described not only physical earth changes, but also occurrences which were incomprehensible to me at the time. Among these projections were the labeling of all products sold in the market place with a tiny rectangle that had bars on it, the instituting of something called a "debit card" which we would be encouraged to use rather than cash, and the redesigning of our currency beginning with the hundred dollar bill. Most astonishing was my writing that one of my mentors described a world wide system of communication that would be computer based and change the very face and fiber of human interaction, not to mention the phenomenon of people reassessing the nature of their sexuality and orientation toward the traditional definition of intimate relationships as well as familial and societal configuration.

More than a quarter of a century later, lo and behold as they used to say, these occurences and others have come to pass. Having lived through these times armed with information that very few others had, I have thankfully mellowed considerably regarding the drama, trauma and subsequent challenges we denizens of this planet now face in all arenas of our lives, and my own personal involvement in making a significant difference. My post-adolescence sense of alarm and emergency has all but dissipated, replaced by the intention to live consciously, to follow my instincts and intuition in answering the question, "Where do we go from here?" The only constant in life is change; the only key to survival is adaptation.

The Vernal Equinox this year occurs at 2:36 AM EST on March 20, which happens to be the earliest start of spring since the year 1896. Now, 104 years later, the celestial energies prevailing at this time are also similar, supporting the pursuit of our deepest dreams from a grounded place of informed faith. A joyous spring equinox, the yearly time of poignant endings and rapturous beginnings, to all.
